The Congo Round Table is crafted from solid iroko wood, a high-density hardwood with outstanding outdoor durability. Rich in natural oils, it offers excellent resistance to corrosion, insects, and weathering, maintaining its structural integrity even after long-term outdoor use.
We intentionally downplayed the wood's natural grain by applying a matte black finish, allowing the material to recede into the background while bringing form and texture to the forefront. Guided by the philosophy of wabi-sabi dark aesthetics, the hand-hammered texture becomes the soul of the piece, delivering a sense of strength and sophistication. The depth, density, and direction of each hammer mark are carefully controlled, achieving a balance between raw natural texture and underlying order and rhythm. This texture visually breaks the potential monotony of solid black, creating subtle light diffusion across the table's surface and offering rich variations of light and shadow depending on the viewing angle.
